Agri-Commodity Futures in India:
impact on Production and Prices September 28, 2007,
at Kalina Campus, Mumbai University,

TAER, in association with Indian Society of
Agricultural Economics and Department
of Economics, University of Mumbai, organized
a one-day seminar on “Agri-Commodity Futures
in India: Impact on Production and Prices” on September
28, 2007, at the University
of Mumbai.
The seminar was attended by academicians, corporate
houses, commodity market traders, and policymakers.
Apart from renowned academicians, the paper contributors
included experts from commercial banks, and representatives
from the RBI and NABARD. The
seminar aimed to fulfil the long-felt need for
a forum for deliberation to a diverse group of stakeholders
of the agri-commodity ecosystem. The seminar also
focused on an objective assessment of the functioning
of futures markets in agri-commodities and suggested
policies and strategies for the growth of futures
markets.

at TAER
A monograph on the history of
commodity trade in India
The work, Back to the Future: The Roots of Commodity
Trade in India, explores ancient Indian history
and the information it provides on commodity trade,
contemporary prices, marketplaces, traders and
trade routes, measurement systems, and state regulation
of such trade. The study takes into account ancient
Indian literature, archaeological evidence, and
inscriptions that record commodity trade and price
regulation for the entire period of Indian history,
particularly from the 3rd century bce onwards.
Commodity Price, Production and
MARKETING ANALYSIS
Research and analyses on prices, production, marketing
channels, etc. of commodities are the core competencies
of TAER. Hence, TAER has been preparing papers, research
reports, etc. on various aspects of the commodity
ecosystem to develop commodity futures markets.
Training Manuals
TAER prepares commodity-specific training manuals.
The various commodities on which manuals are being
prepared are:
- Cotton (in press)
- Gold
- Copper
- Edible oil
- Oilseeds
- Energy
Weather Derivatives
TAER will shortly
embark on a research project on rainfall derivatives
in India, and how such instruments can be effectively
used in water conflict resolution.
Residential Programmes
TAER proposes to hold residential programmes for
the stakeholders in the commodity ecosystem. These
short-term programmes will be for five to seven
days. |
